FAQ

The answers to all your questions and more.

What we do & why we do it

1. So, what do you do?

Innovation. We collaborate with companies to dream big, think differently and turn bold ideas into reality. Whether it’s a physical product, a digital service or a whole new business model, we bring the creativity, technical know-how and the business wits to make it happen. If you have a challenge, we’ll help crack it open and turn it into an opportunity. And if you don’t have a challenge yet? We’ll find one worth solving together.

2. Can you be more specific?

If it’s something physical, we can help develop it, design it and prototype it. Think: mechanical engineering, plastics, medtech solutions, ultrasonic welding, robotics, microtechnology and industrial design.

If it’s a service or experience, we can shape it, enhance it, digitalize it and make it feel seamless. From UX and customer experience to process improvements, our experts can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

And if you’re looking for the next big thing, we’ve got Future Thinking to catapult you ahead of your industry. Expect an immersive ride of creativity that’ll get your team creating in ways they never have before.

3. Who is on your client roster?

We work with startups, SMEs and big corporations from all industries, because we’re big believers in cross-pollination. Some names you might recognize: Tetra Pak, Swisscom , SBB , Boehringer Ingelheim , Raiffeisen and BMC Group . Check out some of our case studies here .

4. What’s your business model?

We have two main value drivers: client project work and our own incubation efforts (from which we already spun-off 14 companies ). Client collaborations are at the heart of what we do – we thrive on building long-term partnerships fueled by creativity, trust and shared ambition. At the same time, we’re also deeply invested in intrapreneurship: developing and launching our own ideas through spin-offs. These two elements run in parallel and enable us to gain valuable experience from incubation , which we can transfer to our client projects.

5. What are your values?

We think of these as ingredients in our innovation recipe: involvement, excellence, creativity, respect, freedom, transparency and authenticity.

6. And your mission?

We play together to invent for better.

Translation: We mix creativity with serious fun to make the world a better place, one creative spark at a time.

7. You say sustainability is important to you… can you prove it?

We’re in the process of earning our B-Corp certification, which is basically the gold standard for companies that actually walk the talk when it comes to doing good. We even added it into our company bylaws – yep, it’s legally official that we aim to make a positive impact on society and the environment. And we don’t just do this for show: every project, every decision, every brainstorm session gets examined through our fourth lens of responsibility – because if it’s not good for people and the planet, it’s just not good enough. And guess what? We invite our clients to put on those same sustainability goggles when working with us. Because making the world better is a Dream Team sport.

8. When do I need Creaholic?

Some situations in innovation where you’d call on us are:

  • When you don’t want to go bankrupt.

  • When you want to become a leader in your industry.

  • When you want to hold onto the industry-leading position you already have.

Basically, if you need a creative boost, a strategic rethink or a full-on invention factory, we’re your people.

9. When do I not need Creaholic?

You probably don’t need us if…

  • you are excited about your return on innovation efforts.

  • you’re looking to industrialize a product.

  • you’re looking for marketing or go-to-market support.

But if you’ve already made it this far, why not go ahead and reach out!

10. What kind of projects make you do a happy dance?

We love projects that stretch our brains, challenge the status quo and make a positive impact on the world (hello, SDGs!). Whether it’s crafting new products, designing the future of services or finding that sweet spot between digital and physical, we’re in. Let’s chat here.

11. What is an invention that I would know?

Ever put together an IKEA piece and thought, “Wow, that clicked together way easier than expected?” That’s thanks to a clever little component called the wedge dowel – and WoodWelding® technology is what makes it possible. This ultrasonic-based innovation was developed to join porous materials by melting and solidifying a thermoplastic component within the structure. In IKEA furniture, it’s used to affix a plastic wedge dowel into the wooden elements so all you have to do is snap the parts together. And it doesn’t stop at flat packs: the same fixing tech has been adapted for medical, dental, veterinary, construction and automotive applications. The WoodWelding project received the Swiss Technology Award in 1999 as well as the Swiss Economic Award in 2006.

Or maybe you’ve come across Arboloom cups (they’re used at the Wankdorf Stadium where Bern’s YB football team plays, among other places). Our innovative sustainable wood technology that rethinks how we use timber, allowing for a sturdy cup with minimal waste. In fact, the cups are 100% biodegradable and compostable and the production process has 65% less impact on the environment compared to the production of a paper cup.

And here’s another cool one: Gjosa , our ultra-efficient water technology that reduces water usage in showers without compromising on experience, was so ground-breaking that L’Oréal snapped it up for their water-saving salon technology.

12. So you’re like IDEO from Switzerland?

Sort of… but we’re smaller, more hands-on and a little quirkier . Our size enables us to be more flexible and create individual offerings we invent, prototype and roll up our sleeves to make real, tangible products as well as innovative experiences.

Creaholic's background

1. Why was Creaholic founded?

Our founder, Elmar Mock (one of the co-inventors of the Swatch), wanted a space where curiosity, playfulness and invention could run wild – and support corporates to dream big and create fast. So he built it in 1986.

2. What does Creaholic mean?

It’s a mash-up of “Create” and “Holic” (as in “workaholic,” but with more fun and less stress). We’re addicted to creativity, obsessed with inventing and absolutely hooked on solving tough problems. So, it’s a very positive addiction.

3. Are you alcoholics?

No, but we do believe in celebrating a good invention with a beer or a glass wine from time to time. We even have a fully stocked bar at our office – strictly for creative thinking, of course. We actually prefer the term “Professional Inventors.”

4. What does “Professional Inventor” mean?

It means we dream up crazy ideas and then actually make them work. Every Creaholic team member is officially a Professional Inventor because we don’t just talk about innovation – we live it, breathe it and prototype the heck out of it.

5. Your logo is funky – what’s the story behind it?

Glad you noticed! This is our visual representation of our view of the innovation process. Each of the colors has a different shape, and each of these shapes represents a state of matter: gas, liquid, solid. We use these states to define the various stages in the innovation process.

6. Gas, liquid, solid… are you chemists?

While we do have some chemists on the team, this isn’t about lab coats and beakers – it’s about the three states of innovation.

  • Gas (orange dots): This is the wild, chaotic, anything-is-possible stage. Think imagination, dreams, freedom and a dash of beautiful madness.

  • Condensation (purple swoosh): Where things start to take shape and flow. It’s about movement, fusion, evolution – aka the blood, sweat, and (sometimes) tears that turn ideas into reality.

  • Solid (green half-circle): Boom! The idea lands. This is structure, maturity and bringing dreams to life in the real world.

Gas and solid are often pushing and pulling – exploration vs. execution. That’s where liquid or condensation comes in, smoothing the way so innovation keeps moving forward (and backward, and forward again).

7. Is Creaholic a Swisscom spin-off?

No, Creaholic was founded 1986. You might be thinking about the strategic partnership that we set up with Swisscom in 2017. In addition to that, we’ve worked closely with Swisscom on some amazing projects, and they’re a great example of a company that embraces innovation.

8. Why on earth is your homebase in Biel/Bienne?

Well, the practical reason is that Elmar Mock, before founding Creaholic, worked at ETA/Swatch in Biel/Bienne. But furthermore, it’s also a very creative and open-minded city and it contains the best of both worlds – French and German, urban and chill, and industrial and alternative.

9. I heard your office space is very inspiring. What makes it so special?

Our Biel/Bienne HQ is a mix of a mad scientist’s lab and a designer’s dream space . We work in an old authentic soap factory with wide windows and high ceilings that give us room to think big. But we don’t make soap, we come up with creative sparks. If you want to meet us in person, then you can get in touch with us here. We also rent out some of our rooms for events. Check out more info about that here.

1. What’s the difference between innovation and invention?

Invention is creating something previously undiscovered. Innovation is translating existing inventions into products, processes or services, or combining things in a new way. At Creaholic, we do both!

3. Do you have a clean desk policy?

Ha! We like to say we have an “organized chaos” policy. Creativity can get messy, and that’s okay – some of the best ideas are born from a cluttered desk.
