From vision to nomination
Swiss designers take part in Design Prize Switzerland by submitting their innovative projects-such as Phonocut.
We’re very proud to announce that Phonocut has been nominated for the Design Prize Switzerland 2021 in the Product Consumer category.
The vision behind Phonocut was to create an attractive product with an easy-to-use interface that could simplify the task of record production. Until now, the production of a vinyl record required technical know-how and industrial-grade machinery. But with Phonocut, any vinyl enthusiast can make high-quality records easily, in the comfort of their own home.
With the touch of a button
The user interaction was a real point of emphasis throughout the development of Phonocut. The goal was to create an appliance that brought together functionality and intuitiveness. After inserting a blank disc and connecting an audio source, the complex analogue process is controlled by a single button push. Nothing more is needed. One could say it’s now easier to make a vinyl record than it once was to burn a CD.
The character and properties of the vinyl recorder are an homage to classic record player design, and its simple appearance is based on the design of high-quality hi-fi equipment. The brushed aluminium housing and the smoked plastic cover as well as the minimalist look find a harmonious balance between the worlds of classical and modern music.
The secret sauce behind Phonocut
Phonocut was developed by a diverse international team. However, the complete design as well as the technical development happened in Switzerland-to be precise, here in the Creaholic innovation factory.
The successful implementation of this vision made use of a secret sauce: close collaboration between the designer, Mario, and the developer, Sigi. Their workstations were right next to each other, leading to a continuous and intensive exchange of ideas, quick decisions and efficient implementation. The result was a balanced interplay of design and technology.
