Minimalist revolution in surgical prescision

Finding a medical-grade torque wrench that met the necessary standards to tighten BoSonic’s ultrasonic bone-cutting blade proved impossible. So, we designed our own and filed it for patent.

Modern surgeries are safer than ever thanks in part to meticulous preparation before a procedure even begins. Every detail matters – down to whether a bone-cutting blade is secured with the perfect torque. Too loose and the blade could slip or cut inefficiently; too tight and the blade or cutter could suffer damage.

This challenge arose when Creaholic partnered with BoSonic to develop the BoSculpter, a precision bone-cutting tool.

Checking all the boxes

Medical tools must meet stringent certification requirements, perform flawlessly, and be ergonomic, simple to use and reusable. We aimed to create a medtech tool that did all of the above – and looked good doing it. Our early iterations didn’t satisfy these expectations. Then, one phrase sparked a breakthrough: “one piece.” This led us to explore compliant mechanisms, ultimately combining two principles to create a groundbreaking solution.

The result is a one-piece torque wrench that deforms under force, providing a clear visual indication when the correct torque is achieved. On top of that, the solution is filed for patent.

Innovation through simplicity

By designing a one-piece tool, we eliminated the need for multiple certified components, lubricants and assembly. The wrench has no moving parts, no wear and no maintenance requirements. It’s fully reusable, easy to clean and compatible with standard sterilizers.

The design is intuitive – modeled after a classic open-ended wrench, making it instantly recognizable and easy to use. This design minimizes production costs, material use and certification complexity, all while maximizing usability, durability and sustainability.
