Challenge

A conventional tap pours one to one and a half litres for a single handwash, most of it straight down the plughole without ever touching soap or skin. In a school, a motorway services or a fast-food restaurant that is repeated thousands of times a day, and the cost is not only water: it is the energy that heated it, the soap dispensed by guesswork, the paper, and the cleaning of the mess around the basin. Meanwhile the thing the basin exists for - hands actually getting clean - depends entirely on whether the person bothers to do it properly.

Solution

Smixin - Smart Mixing Inside - was created at Creaholic in Biel in 2009. Rather than pour water and hope, the system doses it: water, soap and air are mixed and delivered as a fine, high-velocity spray, so the same cleaning work is done with a fraction of the volume. The unit is touch-free and runs a fixed cycle - wet, soap, rinse, and on the three-in-one version paper too - which means every wash is the same wash, whoever is doing it, and takes about twelve seconds from start to dry hands.

Results

About one decilitre of water per wash, against the litre or more a normal tap uses - up to 90% less water, 60% less soap and paper, 80% less CO₂ and around 75% off operating costs. The fixed cycle removes 99% of pathogens and raises handwashing compliance by about 30%, which operators report as fewer sick days. The systems are installed in restaurants, hospitals, schools, canteens, casinos and transit stations across Switzerland, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, and are sold in three families - COMBI, COMPACT and COMFORT - with connected monitoring of use and consumables.
