Challenge

Around 500 billion paper cups are produced each year. Most of a paper cup's environmental impact comes from pulp production - energy, water, chemicals. Packaging that claims to be greener still often runs through that same intensive process. The question was whether cups and packaging could skip paper altogether and still work for cafés, events and brands.

Solution

Arboloom forms cups and packaging from wood veneer with minimal material transformation, bypassing energy- and water-intensive paper production. The products are compostable, brandable, and designed for a circular end of life - wood as a renewable, CO₂-neutral resource rather than a feedstock for pulp.

  • A cup formed from wood veneer, not pulp
  • Swiss spruce - the raw material, one step from the product
  • Birch: veneer keeps the grain the pulping process destroys

Results

Arboloom supplies wood-veneer cups and custom branding for businesses that want to replace plastic and paper. Using veneer instead of paper cuts roughly two-thirds of the footprint tied to pulp production, while keeping a premium, natural look for events, cafés and venues.
